Early Life:
AJ Style (Allen
Neal Jones) was born on June 2, 1977, best known by the ring The Phenomenal is
an American professional wrestler who is signed to WWE performing on the
SmackDown brand, where he is the current WWE Champion in his second reign.
Styles has long been regarded as one of the world's most athletic and best
professional wrestlers.
AJ Styles
gained his first mainstream exposure in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in
2001, but became widely known for his tenure in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling
(TNA) from 2002–2013, where he was dubbed "Mr. TNA". While in TNA,
Styles held the NWA World Heavyweight Championship three times and the TNA
World Heavyweight Championship twice. He was also the inaugural X Division Champion,
a title he held six times. Styles is the first professional wrestler ever to
complete the TNA Triple Crown (five times) and the TNA Grand Slam (two times).
In 2010,
Styles became the first ever TNA-contracted wrestler to be ranked number one on
the annual Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) PWI 500 list. He simultaneously
appeared in Ring of Honor (ROH) from 2002–2006, where he became the first ROH
Pure Champion. In 2014, Styles signed with New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) and
won his first of two IWGP Heavyweight Championships in his debut match with the
company, later becoming the leader of the Bullet Club. He has also competed
internationally on the independent circuit, winning various titles including
the PWG World Championship.
AJ Styles
made two appearances for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 2002: on the
January 26 episode of Metal, in a losing effort against The Hurricane, and in a
dark match prior to the January 27 episode of SmackDown!, where he was defeated
by Rico Constantino. In April, Styles would be offered a developmental deal by
the WWF, where it would require Styles to relocate to Cincinnati, Ohio, where
the Heartland Wrestling Association (HWA) developmental territory was located,
with Styles ultimately declining the deal, as the move would interfere with his
wife's college plans. Despite this, Styles wrestled one non-contracted match
for HWA, on February 19 against Matt Stryker, in a losing effort.
After two
reigns as United States Champion, Styles would go on to win the WWE
Championship a second time. With his second WWE Championship victory in
Manchester, England in November 2017, Styles was recognized by WWE as the first
wrestler to win the title outside of North America.
